Ole explains Martial's absence

Saturday 16 October 2021 14:29

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an update on Anthony Martial and why he is not in the squad at Leicester City.

United have made five changes from the side that played against Everton before the international break and one of the alterations include Anthony Martial. The Frenchman, who scored our goal against the Toffees in the 1-1 draw, is not involved at the King Power Stadium.

"No, he’s come back from France [duty] not fit so he’s not trained all week," Ole told MUTV's Stewart Gardner prior to Saturday's kick off.

"Hopefully we can have him back soon."

Ole: Rashford and Maguire are ready

We caught up with the boss at pitch-side to discuss Maguire and Rashford's returns, plus Martial's absence...

The Reds already lost Raphael Varane for a few weeks after he was also part of the France squad that won the UEFA Nations League trophy, by beating Spain in the final.

Thankfully, our third member of Les Bleus' group, Paul Pogba, returned unscathed and was named in the XI against the Foxes.

In more positive news, club captain Harry Maguire is back in the Reds' line-up after recovering from the calf injury he sustained against Aston Villa back in September.

"Of course, it’s great to have him back as Harry is a big player for us," the manager said to club media about the defender's return.

"He came through the session [on Friday] alright and had no reaction to it. He’s done lots of work with the physios and a load of rehab work. There’s no reaction, so he’s ready."

The manager has picked his XI to face Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

The boss added that Marcus Rashford has impressed in training leading up to the clash with the Foxes, with the striker among the substitutes.

"Of course, he’s had a long time out of the game and now he’s ready to contribute," the boss said.

"He’s looked really sharp and, of course, it’s been a long time since he played a game. We’re going to gently give him more minutes."

In addition to Maguire's return, Nemanja Matic, Jadon Sancho, Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo are all back in Ole's starting line-up at the King Power Stadium.
