United team news for Spurs match

Thursday 18 June 2020 10:19

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told us that he almost has a full squad to choose from ahead of Manchester United's first Premier League match in over three months, against Tottenham Hotspur on Friday evening.

The manager indicated that his team was in good health, which suggests that Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford are in line for selection after overcoming lengthy injury issues.

However, defensive pairing Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones are likely to miss out.

The pair have not made it through the Reds' mini 'pre-season' ahead of the 2019/20 season's resumption following the coronavirus-enforced interruption.

“Yeah we’ve got a couple of injuries,” Ole told reporter Stewart Gardner. “Axel will probably be missing and Phil Jones will be missing. Apart from that I would say everyone else is available for selection.

“Pre-season you want to give everyone a chance, everyone the same opportunity to stake a claim for the team. Everyone will play a part, we’ve got plenty of games. Hopefully we’ve got a few cup games, plus the league games and hopefully the Europa League, so we’ll be going into August some time.”
Pogba, who has not featured for the Reds since December 2019, has been playing a full part in training, as has Rashford, whose season looked to be under threat when he left the pitch with a serious back injury during an FA Cup replay with Wolves in January.

Elsewhere, Eric Bailly had made a positive return to first-team action prior to the lockdown, as had midfielder Scott McTominay.

United's most recent Premier League starting XI (against Manchester City on 8 March) was as follows: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Wiliams; Fred, Matic, Fernandes; James, Martial.

HOW ARE TOTTENHAM SHAPING UP?

Prior to the interruption to 2019/20, Jose Mourinho's side were struggling with their own injury problems – particularly in the attacking department.

But the pause has enabled them to recover captain Harry Kane, South Korean phenomenon Son Heung-min and new signing Steven Bergwijn, who joined the club from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window.

The trio, plus midfielder Moussa Sissoko, were all involved in Spurs' friendly with Norwich City last Friday, which finished 2-1 to the Canaries and Mourinho confirmed Kane, Son and Sissoko would all be involved from the start against the Reds.

However, there was a recent blow for Mourinho when the FA announced that Delle Alli would be suspended for one match following a contentious social media post in February. That means he will miss out, while Giovanni Lo Celso will undergo a late fitness test. Japhet Tanganga is also out, with a back injury.
