Mason's the man for Ole

Mason Greenwood has thanked Manchester United’s backroom support team for launching him into the season firing on all cylinders.

The Reds striker missed England’s Euros campaign during the summer with injury but, according to boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, put in a mature display in our 5-1 rout of Leeds at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old opened his account for the 2021/22 campaign in the second half against the Yorkshire side, putting United back into the lead and sparking a goal blitz that took the wind out of Leeds’ comeback attempts.

“I’m feeling good, feeling strong and the coaching staff have helped me to start the season strong and make sure I was ready to go today,” he told MUTV.

‘’I thought the whole team performance was amazing, the whole backline David [De Gea] in goal, everyone was amazing.

“It’s a very big win but don’t take anything away from Leeds; they ran all game and we knew that we had to match them.

“You have to match them man for man any time you play Leeds, and we got the three points and, like I said, that’s all that matters.

“It’s a nice feeling seeing those goals go in and we’ve got the three points and that’s all that matters today.’’

Boss Solskjaer played Greenwood as his attacking focal point against Leeds, but doesn’t want to pigeon-hole the teenager in one role.

And he also dipped into the Old Trafford archives to make his point about his fluid attack, which was an exciting comparison for supporters.

“How do you know I want him to be a striker?” the manager replied, after being asked about him wanting him as a centre-forward.

Greenwood was absolutely buzzing with our 5-1 win...

"Who says I want him [Greenwood] to be a striker? I have got forwards who can play different positions.

“He scored a goal from left-wing position. He is so effective from the right. He can still be a no.9 and centre-forward the way he drops in. He is a natural footballer.

“The way he has developed the last couple of seasons, you can see the way he burst away on that second goal, I think that is a man compared to a boy that was in the first-team two years ago.

“I like what he has done in pre-season. His has worked so hard to get his fitness and he is ready to go.

“You can see with the forwards we have got into the team with Mason, Jadon [Sancho], Marcus [Rashford], Anthony [Martial], Dan [James], even they can play in different positions.

“Edinson [Cavani] is probably our only one fixed in one position. The rest I think we should just leave them to enjoy developing in their careers.

“I remember Wayne [Rooney] Carlos Tevez and Ronaldo playing together. Good players can always play together and we need movement and that is what we had today.”
