Team GB lose at the Olympics

Olympics update: Toone and Groenen knocked out

Ella Toone and Jackie Groenen have met Olympic heartbreak as Team GB and the Netherlands were both knocked out at the quarter-final stages.

An Ellen White double seemed to have secured a path through to the semi-finals for Hege Riise's Team GB side as they led 2-1 in Kashima but Chelsea’s Sam Kerr scored for Australia in the 89th minute to take the game to extra-time. The Matildas took a two-goal lead during the additional half-hour, capitalising on a missed penalty by Caroline Weir.

Ella Toone was proud to be in Team GB's squad but her Tokyo adventure is now over.

White grabbed one back for Team GB, completing her hat-trick, but it wasn’t enough for the Brits, who lost 4-3 and are eliminated at the same stage as they were at London 2012.

Toone had become an option off the bench for Riise’s squad, having initially been named on the reserve list. She appeared in the group-stage win against Chile but wasn’t brought on again before Team GB’s exit.

Meanwhile, Toone's United team-mate Jackie Groenen started for the Netherlands in their quarter-final against the USA, the midfielder playing a key part in the Dutch run to the quarter-finals.

Groenen had a good tournament but it wasn't to be for the Orange.

There was an obvious comparison to be made between the two games. The Netherlands, too, had led at one point, the insatiable goalscorer Vivienne Miedema getting yet another goal in the first half. The USA came from behind before half-time, only for Miedema to equalise. Like Team GB, the Netherlands were awarded a penalty, and they too missed it.

Neither side could find a winner in extra-time and the USA triumphed 4-2 on penalties, setting up a semi-final against Canada, themselves penalty shoot-out winners against Brazil.
