Late winner sees Batlle’s Spain through

Sunday 17 July 2022 12:08

Manchester United Women full-back Ona Batlle reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2022 last night, after Spain defeated Denmark at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Substitute Marta Cardona struck in the 90th minute of the clash, rising highest at the back post to convert Olga Carmona’s inviting cross.

Denmark caused Spain some problems early on, with Karen Holmgaard and Pernille Harder both having great opportunities to break the deadlock.

But Spain’s strong defence - featuring Batlle at right-back - stood firm, allowing the Spaniards to take control of the tie.

While they controlled the majority of play, Vilda’s side struggled to create clearcut chances, with the best coming in the form of an Athenea del Castillo effort after a scramble in the box.

Spain didn’t give up and eventually had their goal in added time when Cardona headed Carmona’s centre beyond Lene Christensen.

Spain only needed a draw from the fixture, but took all three points to finish second in Group B and set up a last-eight clash with Sarina Wiegman’s England.

This fixture is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 20 July at the Amex Stadium, and we could see Batlle line up against her United team-mates Mary Earps, Alessia Russo and Ella Toone.

WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY AT THE EUROS?

Jackie Groenen’s Netherlands play their final group match this evening, taking on Switzerland at Bramall Lane. This fixture is set for a 17:00 GMT kick-off.

The Dutch only need a draw from this clash to ensure they proceed to the next round and the 2017 champions will fancy their chances.
