Opposition watch: Newcastle back on their feet

Thursday 30 March 2023 09:08

When the full-time whistle blew in the 2023 Carabao Cup final, the euphoria of Manchester United’s players was in contrast to the despair of our opponents, Newcastle United.

Erik ten Hag’s team had successfully navigated our north-east opponents and lifted the first trophy of the Dutchman’s reign.

In the Premier League, the two sides have been competing in and around the top four for most of the season, and we enter Sunday’s fixture at St. James’ Park with just three points between the teams in third and fifth places, respectively.

The Reds return to action on Sunday, taking on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

Following February’s final, and a subsequent defeat against Manchester City, the Magpies have experienced an uptick in form.

Consecutive victories over Nottingham Forest and Wolves have put Eddie Howe’s side firmly back in the European conversation, with in-form frontman Alexander Isak leading their charge.

The Sweden forward will be no stranger to his national team captain Victor Lindelof, nor former Real Madrid stalwart Raphael Varane, whom he faced while playing for Real Sociedad, and will be keen to find the back of the net for the third consecutive game on Sunday.

The Magpies will be without Paraguay attacker Miguel Almiron, due to injury, with the South American notching the winner in their recent victory over Wolves. The triumph over Forest the following week, though, was all about Isak, who grabbed a match-winning brace, the latter an injury-time penalty.

Our Carabao Cup final opponents had stumbled into February's final at Wembley in February, despite their previously impressive early-season form. But since the disappointment of that defeat against Ten Hag's side, Newcastle have got back to winning ways.

We drew 0-0 with the north-east side in the reverse fixture in October, as well as playing out a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park last season. Both sides will be keen to pick up all three points this time, though, as the Reds look to strengthen our grip on a top-four spot.
