Paddy's excitement for Champions League return

Tuesday 29 August 2023 07:00

Manchester United's Champions League campaign will become clearer when the group-stage draw is made in Monaco on Thursday from 17:00 BST.

The Reds will be playing in Europe's premier competition for the first time under Erik ten Hag and are set to be in Pot 2 after our third-placed finish in the Premier League last season.

It's always an exciting moment for supporters and United legend Paddy Crerand is already anticipating which teams we might come up against.

The Reds will discover our Champions League group-stage opponents this week

“It’s a competition that a club of this size should be in every season, and it’s good to return to it after a season in the Europa League,” he wrote in his United Review column for the Nottingham Forest game.

“I see we’re in pot two this year, so we’ll get one of the top opponents outside of England in our group – that could be Barcelona, Bayern Munich or PSG – but equally we’ll avoid Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and others who are in our own pot, so I wouldn’t say there’s a huge advantage to the seedings.

“Whoever we draw, I’ll look forward to those evenings under the Old Trafford floodlights.”

Among the seven top seeds we could face are two Spanish sides, Barcelona and Sevilla, who the Reds encountered in the Europa League last season.

The other potential opponents are Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich, Italian outfit Napoli, French giants Paris Saint-Germain, Portuguese side Benfica and Dutch team Feyenoord.

With qualifiers still ongoing, the other seeding pots won’t be confirmed until the morning of the draw.

We will, of course, keep you updated with who the Reds will face and fixture details following Thursday's draw on ManUtd.com and in the United App.
