Tuesday 02 February 2021 17:30

Paul Pogba has been voted Manchester United's Player of the Month for January.

The Frenchman enjoyed an excellent start to 2021 and was rewarded with over half of the vote on the Official App (55 per cent) as he picked up the trophy for the fifth time since he rejoined the club from Juventus.

There is no doubting Paul's huge influence since the turn of the year and he will hope to help overcome Southampton at Old Trafford this evening (Tuesday) - the fixture in which he made his second debut for the Reds back in 2016.

WHY POGBA WAS TOP DOG

The midfielder scored the winning goal in significant victories on the road, at Burnley and Fulham, where he reminded us of his impressive shooting prowess. However, there has been far more than goals to admire about his performances.

Looking back to peak fitness, the World Cup winner has had fans purring with his displays in a variety of positions throughout midfield, combining elegance with strength, and producing the goods consistently. He was fouled to earn the penalty that led to Bruno Fernandes scoring against Aston Villa and was denied what would have been a famous winning goal at Anfield by a smart save from Alisson.

KEY STATS

Pogba is the fourth different Red to win the accolade this season and he succeeds Fernandes as the monthly victor.

The former Academy product has now registered 28 goals in 129 Premier League appearances. This term, he has had 19 shots in the division, with 10 of those on target.

On average, he has made 52.39 passes per league match in 2020/21 and fired off 71 accurate long balls in total.

WHO ELSE WAS NOMINATED?

United captain Harry Maguire (four per cent) and fellow defender Luke Shaw (41 per cent) were the other men on the shortlist for the prize.

This is perhaps recognition of a spell that has included clean sheets away to Burnley, Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League.

Maguire scored in the home defeat to Sheffield United and his disallowed goal at Turf Moor should also surely have counted, while Shaw has been in outstanding form at left-back, earning the Man of the Match award at Anfield and providing plenty of ammunition for the forwards.
