Who would Scholes and Hargreaves pick tonight?

Former Manchester United midfielders Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves have had their say on some of the big selection issues facing Erik ten Hag in Barcelona.

The Reds are without suspended pair Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer, plus injured players Christian Eriksen, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay, Antony and Anthony Martial.

It means the boss will have to tinker with his line-up to face impressive La Liga leaders Barcelona on their home patch, with kick-off at 17:45 GMT.

During an exclusive chat with MUTV's Liam Bradford, the two pundits, who are in the Catalan capital to cover the game live for BT Sport, forwarded their own views on the dilemmas Ten Hag will have been mulling over in the build-up to the Europa League play-off.

In terms of the defence, Scholes revealed he feels Tyrell Malacia reminds him a little of Patrice Evra, who also took a short while to settle into life in the Premier League, and admitted this could be an ideal encounter for Aaron Wan-Bissaka's long-established qualities.

"I think Malacia has looked much better," said the legendary playmaker. "He's very aggressive and almost in a similar vein to Patrice as it took him a little time to get going. He's been great at left-back but is going to have to be on his mettle tonight. Obviously, concentration is a big thing.

"At right-back, I suppose it could be a game for Wan-Bissaka. For me, I'd want a proper defender and there is no doubt he is a fantastic defender, I think."

As for the central defenders, Paul predicted: "I think Raphael Varane will play with Luke Shaw. It's been a partnership we've seen before and Luke has been fantastic. I saw it as him just filling in for a couple of games but think the manager really likes him there, with his pace and composure."

Scholesy also anticipates Fred coming into midfield to recreate his Brazil partnership with Casemiro, as our no.18 is available despite his domestic ban.

Hargreaves, meanwhile, thinks there are questions to be answered about the shape of the attack, although he appreciates Marcus Rashford is a key figure in this area.

"The biggest call for me is who plays up top and who plays on the right," he said. "Does Alejandro Garnacho play? Does Wout Weghorst play?

"I think United can beat Barcelona. It'll be hard but they will be worried about Marcus's pace and there will be space in behind. I see a lot of long balls into the channels as these guys play one-v-one. I think, if United take their chances, they can win the game but you'd always take a draw in a game like this."

Owen Hargreaves, who won the 2008 Champions League with United, feels Marcus Rashford will cause problems.

Scholes admitted that his ideal scenario would be a repeat of the Champions League group stages in 1998, which saw 12 goals shared across the two ties, with Barcelona going out and United eventually getting our hands on the trophy to complete the Treble, by beating Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp.

"I think this manager [Erik ten Hag] is very ambitious," he added. "I don't think he's the cautious type. He's got a way of playing but I'd say it's a place to come and be cautious. You've seen how well they're doing. A draw would be an amazing result, I'd snap your hand off for that now. Even if there's one goal in it, United would still have a big chance at home.

"The 3-3 draw was brilliant. Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke were sensational at the time. There was a great goal I'm sure everyone will remember. If it can go back to 3-3, I hope so, two 3-3s and then United to win on penalties!"
