Scholes glad to see Ruud back

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is pleased to see Ruud van Nistelrooy take up a coaching role with the Reds.

The Dutchman, who linked up superbly with Scholesy in their playing days, has become one of Erik ten Hag's assistants, alongside Rene Hake.

With such a rich history with the Reds, Ruud has already spoken to us about the reception he is certain to receive at Old Trafford on the Premier League's opening night, against Fulham, and Scholes feels it is important to have such links in the current set-up.

Darren Fletcher's position has changed to first-team coach and the Scot's continued involvement is also something that gets the thumbs up from his former colleague in the engine room at Old Trafford.

"It’s great to have him around the squad, back at the club," said Scholes, who is taking part in the Legends match against Celtic on 7 September. "Obviously, he's done his own coaching stuff and managed as well, and not only him but Darren Fletcher as well.

"Man United players who were there when they were successful; know how to win, know what it takes and, hopefully, they can transfer a bit of knowledge to these players who haven’t quite made it yet."

Scholes is looking to be fighting fit for next month's big date at Old Trafford, against former Celtic stars. While recognising the priority is raising vital funds for Manchester United Foundation, he knows there will be a competitive edge when he looks to spray the ball around as he always did on home turf.

"You pretend not to be [competitive] when you’re building up to it and during it but, of course, you want to win," he added.

"It’s not the most important thing. The most important thing is raising as much money as we can, get as many fans as we can there for the Foundation, to help with all projects like this [school visit], like we’ve seen today.

"But, yeah, I’m sure, once we start playing, the competitive edge will come back. I’ve not played football since the Soccer Aid game, where I actually did my cruciate ligament."
