Phil Jones has completed a long road of recovery for Manchester United, as he makes his first Premier League appearance since January 2020.

The defender has overcome a torrid time with injuries and will be welcomed back at Old Trafford, as the Reds take on Wolves in our first match of the new year.

After being on the bench for five matches this season, he comes into the side to partner Raphael Varane with Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly all absent.

There is some big news regarding the side that starts our first fixture of 2022.

Jones's last senior game in any competition was in the 6-1 win at Tranmere Rovers in the Emirates FA Cup, when he scored in the tie at Prenton Park on 26 January 2020.

He has, however, played for the Under-23s in 2021/22 and in behind-closed-doors friendlies.

"From what I've seen, so far, I can only speak about the last four weeks in training, he was extremely professional all the time, even when he was not in the squad," said interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

"Since last night, the other two centre-backs who played against Burnley were out so, for me, he was the logical choice."

All credit must go to Phil for his perseverance in getting back after his lengthy lay-off.
