PL Collection: United's best games v Brighton

Thursday 09 June 2022 11:00

A week before the Premier League fixtures are announced for 2022/23, our series moves on to Brighton & Hove Albion and classic clashes with the Seagulls.

The Premier League Collection is now available to view in full via the United App and ManUtd.com, and we have selected the four best matches with the south-coast club from the overall list of 10 fixtures.

We enjoyed a run of six successive league wins over Brighton before the defeat at the Amex Stadium last month and our picks come from this spell.

Our opening video is of the sensational 3-2 win in 2020, when Bruno Fernandes's penalty winner actually came after the final whistle had sounded.

26 September 2020: A game decided by the very last kick...

BRIGHTON 2 UNITED 3 (2020/21)

Nothing quickened the pulse more than this remarkable contest in September 2020 as the Reds ended up in the unique position of scoring the winner after the final whistle. Neal Maupay's penalty was cancelled out by a Lewis Dunk own goal ahead of the break. Marcus Rashford netted a superb solo strike to edge United in front but the hosts were excellent, with Leandro Trossard hitting the woodwork three times. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men did have two goals ruled out for offside but it was hard to argue Albion did not deserve a 95th-minute equaliser from Solly March. Nonetheless, Maupay handled a Harry Maguire header in the box and although referee Chris Kavanagh did not spot it, VAR did. With 101 minutes on the clock, Bruno Fernandes was the calmest man in the Amex when he converted the penalty.

A dominant display extended our unbeaten record to 15 games and was illuminated by a brilliant double by Fernandes. The Reds were excellent value for the three points in an empty stadium and went ahead through Mason Greenwood. Fernandes added a second just before the half-hour mark, with the aid of a deflection, from a Paul Pogba pass, but his third was an absolute gem. A brilliant breakaway ended with Greenwood crossing for Bruno to volley past Mat Ryan in spectacular fashion. David De Gea made a few saves, the pick of which came from Aaron Connolly, to preserve the clean sheet.

30 June 2020: Bruno's brilliant brace at Brighton helps United pick up three more Premier League points...

UNITED 3 BRIGHTON 1 (2019/20)

Two goals inside two minutes put the Reds in full control at Old Trafford on a day when three Academy graduates found the net. Anthony Martial teed up a heavily deflected strike by Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay soon doubled the advantage, eventually being credited with the effort as it initially went down as a Davy Propper own goal during a goalmouth scramble. Dunk pulled one back with a header from close range, only for Rashford to make the points safe. Martial again provided the assist and the England international did the rest, ramming his shot in off the underside of the bar.

10 November 2019: The rampant Reds sweep aside Brighton, with some slick attacking play on show...

UNITED 2 BRIGHTON 1 (2020/21)

Former striker Danny Welbeck threatened to stop the Reds winning this Old Trafford clash with a shock opener. The Academy graduate pounced on the rebound after his initial effort was saved by Dean Henderson to hand the Seagulls the lead. It took some time for the Reds to respond but, on 62 minutes, Fernandes drove forward to set up Rashford for the leveller. With time running out, Pogba's shot was diverted past Robert Sanchez by Greenwood to earn a victory that kept United in second place in the Premier League table.
