Wayne Rooney recording his UTD Podcast.

Rooney's unmissable UTD Podcast out on Monday

Friday 20 November 2020 15:55

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney appears on Monday's UTD Podcast, bringing exclusive revelations about his fabulous career.

The club's all-time record goalscorer discusses his brilliant stay at Old Trafford like never before, providing presenters Sam Homewood, Helen Evans and David May with a unique insight into what it was like fulfilling his enormous potential with the Reds, following the move from Everton in 2004.

He discusses that transfer in detail and why an extraordinary deal was mooted, as his time with his boyhood club on Merseyside was coming to an end.

Speaking openly about the confidence he always had in his ability, even from an early age, the current Derby County man explains the pressures that accompanied the switch to Manchester and the main factor in wanting to join the Reds.

The former United and England captain performed alongside some of the game's greats but picks the best player he's ever worked with, and also has a fascinating answer when asked about the youngster who had the most potential.

Find out how Wayne views his all-time scoring records for club and country, his best position and the one where he hated playing.

There is also amazing, if humorous, detail about how he prepared for the biggest win of his illustrious career - the 2008 Champions League final - and one of the biggest regrets of his footballing life during that same season, which, he feels, was down to a rare mistake by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Of course, Rooney talks about working with Sir Alex, plus David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, as he assesses the changing of the guard in the managerial position.

Perhaps most interesting of all is his honest appraisal of the situation in 2010, when it looked like he would leave the club, and how he even got to the stage where he imagined himself slotting into one side in particular.

Speaking like never before on that contract dispute - and how it was resolved - he is able to look back with a considered, mature reflection about a whirlwind few days when he was seriously contemplating quitting Old Trafford.

As always, there are laughs aplenty as well, including tales from inside the dressing room, remembering when Maysie marked him in the Reserves and his relationship with the fans.

It all adds up to another unmissable episode of UTD Podcast, following on from last week's cracker with Bruno Fernandes, and a string of players past and present over the past year or so.

Look out for more stories on Wayne's incredible episode, ahead of its worldwide release at 17:00 GMT on Monday.
