Pundit Predictions: Who starts v Rangers?
Ruben Amorim could make changes to his Manchester United team after a busy week in the build-up to Thursday night’s UEFA Europa League fixture against Rangers.
The 20:00 GMT kick-off provides an opportunity for the Reds to bounce back from last weekend’s frustrating home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, who ended our strong start to 2025.
Ahead of another Old Trafford night under the lights, we’ve been playing our popular United Predictions game alongside MUTV pundit Wes Brown. Join in guessing whether Ruben will give Altay Bayindir another chance in one of the cup competitions and whether there will be any other changes in the line-up. The former Reds also give their predictions for the score, opening goalscorer and Man of the Match!
Predict Ruben's starting XI, the scoreline, first goalscorer and your Man of the Match, and you’ll have the chance to win great prizes if you do.
So, what can United do against Rangers? Well, two-time UEFA Champions League winner Wes Brown expects victory at Old Trafford, with a dominant performance from one forward.

WES BROWN’S PREDICTIONS
United XI: Onana; De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez; Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo, Mazraoui; Amad, Zirkzee, Fernandes.
Score: United 2-1 Rangers
First scorer: Bruno Fernandes
Man of the Match: Bruno Fernandes
Wes is hoping for big things from our captain on a night when victory would help stabilise the mood at United, after a mixed start to the new year.
Bruno scored our only goal in Sunday’s defeat to Brighton, calmly converting from the penalty spot to equalise 23 minutes in after Yankuba Minteh’s opener.
Wes thinks Bruno will net again, and thus hit his first goal of this season’s Europa League on his 50th all-time appearance in the competition.
“It’s really important,” Ruben Amorim said of Bruno’s constant availability for United.
“He’s amazing. He’s always ready to play, and the impact that he has in the team, the calm he brings on the ball with the confidence, it’s really important for us.”
In terms of changes to Ruben’s team, Brown has just one: Lisandro Martinez replacing Leny Yoro in the backline. He thinks Amorim will stick with Andre Onana, despite Bayindir playing in our two most recent cup games, against Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup in December, and Arsenal in the FA Cup earlier this month.
That means Joshua Zirkzee starting up front despite Rasmus Hojlund’s strong form in this competition, having netted four goals in Ruben’s two European games in charge of the Reds.
OUR WRITERS' PREDICTIONS
Mark Froggatt predicts... A FAST START
Ruben’s press conference on Wednesday was pure box office – seriously, you need to watch it – after he passionately explained his comments about the squad’s recent form. His comments on the power of the first goal were fascinating and, with that in mind, I’m hopeful a fired-up United side will start confidently on what is a crucial European night at Old Trafford. In my predictions, I’ve backed Rasmus Hojlund to score first in a 2-1 win: the Dane has a positive record in Europe and he's desperate to end his recent run without a goal. My Man of the Match? It has to be Amad, of course. The diminutive Ivorian is flying and might have a point to prove against his former loan side. Good luck, Reds!
Harry Robinson predicts... A-MAD NIGHT, AGAIN
Out of Amad's two loan moves away, it's fair to say his spell at Sunderland was more successful than the stint at Rangers. He's spent the past few months proving his quality to the world and this particular fixture provides a more specific opportunity to do that. The noise from Rangers' support will bring the best out of the Stretford End and, in a bouncing atmosphere, I'm expecting an end-to-end game with the visitors aiming to punish us on the counter-attack. United will need to carve some chances when our opponents sit back, but there should also be room to succeed in transition ourselves, and I think Amad will be the beneficiary on a meaningful night for him. He shone last Thursday with his hat-trick against Southampton. This time, I think he'll score one and assist another two in what I'm hoping is a bonkers night of European football to entertain. So, here's a brave call for a 3-2 United win with one each from Amad, Bruno Fernandes and Joshua Zirkzee.
AMORIM’S EXPECTATIONS
“Rangers are very aggressive — they are British! So we expect a very difficult game, a very physical game, but we want also to improve the way we play the ball. We want to be more calm with the ball. We try to improve on that in this last training — it was the only one. So I expect a better performance.”
