Pundit Predictions: Back three or four?

Tuesday 30 December 2025 16:54

Manchester United host Wolves in the Premier League at 20:15 GMT, and one of the big pre-match talking points is around the formation the Reds will play.

Ruben Amorim has preferred a 3-4-2-1 system across his tenure as United head coach, but the boss opted for a four-at-the-back setup for the 1-0 win over Newcastle United last time out.

On the back of that success over the Magpies, will we stick with the same formation or revert to a three-man defence for the visit of Wolves?

Former Reds Danny Simpson and Siobhan Chamberlain have had their say while playing the free United Predictions game in our app…

DANNY SIMPSON’S PREDICTIONS

Danny has gone for three at the back with his line-up selection but the ex-United full-back is predicting an unchanged team from the Boxing Day victory over the Magpies, hoping that midfielder Mason Mount is fit enough to recover from the injury that forced him off at half-time of that encounter.

The personnel involved means that the Reds would be capable of playing with three or four defenders, with Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu's versatility helping to facilitate this, as our goalscorer against Newcastle could flank the backline as a wing-back or play higher up again as a winger.

Line-up: Lammens; Martinez, Heaven, Shaw; Dalot, Casemiro, Ugarte, Dorgu; Mount, Cunha; Sesko.

Correct score: United 3 Wolves 0

First scorer: Matheus Cunha

Man of the Match: Matheus Cunha

SIOBHAN CHAMBERLAIN’S PREDICTIONS

Like Danny, Siobhan also thinks that Matheus Cunha will play a starring role against his former club, but with the Reds continuing in a system that utilises four defenders rather than three.

With Mount’s fitness a question mark, the ex-United Women goalkeeper is also tipping Academy graduate Jack Fletcher to make his first senior start, having come off the bench in each of our last two fixtures.

Line-up: Lammens; Dalot, Heaven, Martinez, Shaw; J. Fletcher, Casemiro, Ugarte; Dorgu, Sesko, Cunha.

Correct score: United 4 Wolves 0

First scorer: Matheus Cunha

Man of the Match: Matheus Cunha

Danny and Siobhan will be part of the MUTV team bringing you live matchday coverage from Old Trafford later – our build-up starts at 18:45 GMT.
