Shetty highlights the key to Rashy's mental journey

Tuesday 23 May 2023 10:30

Jay Shetty, the world-renowned life coach and ardent Manchester United fan, admits he is full of admiration for the mental resilience that Marcus Rashford has displayed this season.

Our homegrown hero experienced one of the toughest campaigns of his career in 2021/22, but he has turned his situation around in sensational fashion.

The no.10 spent last summer at an individual training camp in the United States before reporting to Carrington for pre-season under Erik ten Hag.

Evidently, he has reaped the rewards.

Marcus has scored 29 goals across all competitions so far this term and is among the favourites to win our Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award during next Monday’s prize-giving ceremony at Old Trafford.

A former monk turned author, podcaster and purpose coach, Shetty has been blown away by Rashford’s journey this season and he speaks passionately about why it is a monumental achievement.

United fan and best-selling purpose coach Jay Shetty is astonished by Erik ten Hag’s transformative work this season…

“It takes a lot of resilience to be okay with having a season where everyone's considering you to be failing and making mistakes, to have the grit and resilience to come back from that and to constantly prove yourself week in, week out, when there's that many people talking about you like that,” Shetty told us.

“That many eyeballs, that much stress. I think it really requires an inner resolve to say, ‘this is what I'm about, this is what I've been trying to show the whole time, and now I have the support.’

“And I think the way, you know, his relationship with Erik, it’s really fun to watch as well. And I think the investment that Erik’s made in him, I think that's paid off massively. So, for him, I think it's the resilience and grit.

“It takes a lot of resilience to say, ‘I've just had a tough season, but now I'm going to turn it around and we're going to keep going.’”

This season, Rashford has celebrated his goals by standing still, closing his eyes and pointing to the temple of his head in an apparent nod to his improved mental state.

While Marcus has not spoken in detail about his celebration, Shetty suspects it is a reference to psychology and admits he would love to ask the Manchester-born hero all about it.
Jay Shetty says

"To me it points to that it's all about mindset. It's all up in here. And I think that we've always said football is a mental game, but I think we're getting to see that in action now in a really powerful way."

“I hope it is. I haven't got to ask him yet. I interviewed him a couple of years back [for UTD Podcast], actually during the pandemic so a few years back. And that wasn't a celebration then.

“So I'd love to ask him why. But to me it points to that it's all about mindset. It's all up in here. And I think that we've always said football is a mental game, but I think we're getting to see that in action now in a really powerful way.”
