Williams wins WSL Goal of the Month

Manchester United Women's forward Rachel Williams has won the FA Women’s Super League Goal of the Month award for January.

The 35-year-old fired the Reds to the top of the table with an emphatic effort against Reading, as she dribbled past three defenders before smashing home a goal worthy of winning any game.

Williams was mobbed by her team-mates shortly after the strike, which was her third for the club and arrived with only three minutes left on the clock at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

It's been another successful month for Marc Skinner's side, with chasing down silverware still the main aim this season.

Also nominated for the accolade were Aston Villa’s Kenza Dali, Everton pair Gabby George and Agnes Beever-Jones, plus Leicester duo Aileen Whelan and Monique Robinson.

But Williams staved off strong competition to claim the accolade, with fans selecting her goal as the overall winner for January.

The former Birmingham City forward has made 10 appearances for the side this season, since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

“I’m so happy I got the goal,” she told MUTV following the game last month. “In this league you can’t take any game for granted.

“A few of the [Reading] girls said to me that I broke their hearts, but it’s all in a day’s work, I’m just doing my job!

“They’re the [matches] we learn from. Whether it’s 4-0, 6-0, or 1-0 today, you have to keep grinding out results if you want to keep pushing at the top.

“[We have to] keep on the teams around us, [and continue] keeping them on their toes because they’re going to be keeping us on our toes. For us, we concentrate on the next game now.”

Rachel Williams reflects on her late winner against Reading, as United Women go top of the WSL table...

Having booked our spot in the next round of the Women's FA Cup last weekend, United are continuing to grind out results when it matters most this term.

Still top of the WSL at present, Skinner's side return to action against Everton this Sunday, with that game taking place at Leigh Sports Village (12:00 GMT kick-off).

With the Reds top of the pile on goal difference ahead of Chelsea, it's set to be an exciting second half of the season for all involved.

Congratulations to Rachel on the award!
