Rangnick explains changes to face Clarets

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick says a need for energy against Burnley is behind the number of changes to face the Clarets at Old Trafford.

The boss added that the quick turnaround from the Reds’ trip to Newcastle on Monday also influenced his decisions, with a total of six alterations.

Speaking to MUTV, Ralf said: "Since we only played three days ago in an away game, when we got back very late, in the middle of the night, we could not train very much.

“So we tried to prepare the team in the locker room with regard to what the game-plan should look like. Tonight is all about energy and raising the energy level.

“We had that level against Crystal Palace in front of 75,000 fans and this is definitely what we need in tonight's game.”

Find out the XI on duty for the Reds' final game of 2021 - against the Clarets at Old Trafford.

Among the players coming into the starting XI is Edinson Cavani, after the Uruguayan scored as a substitute on Tyneside.

"When Edi came on at half-time at Newcastle, not only did he score the equaliser but he also had another two great opportunities,” said Rangnick.

“He is in good shape so, for me, it was logical to play him and Cristiano [Ronaldo] together. Yes, the other changes are just due to the fact that we only played three days ago. It is all about energy and fresh legs."

On the test that Sean Dyche’s side will pose, the German added: “They play a lot of long balls and, on average, more than 80 long balls in every game, so, in the first instance, we should try to prevent those long balls.

“But this will not always be possible, so if those long balls are being played, it is about who wins the second balls. This is tactically the most important. It is not so much important that you win the first ball, the aerial duel. It is more important that you win the second ball and then it is about transition."
