Rangnick: We showed a good reaction

Thursday 28 April 2022 23:18

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick was impressed with the reaction his side showed during our 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

The Reds fell a goal behind midway through the second half, as Marcus Alonso volleyed the Blues in front. But just two minutes later, the club's top scorer this season, Cristiano Ronaldo, found the net in front of a raucous Stretford End to ensure the game would end all square.

United remain in sixth position in the Premier League table and following the full-time whistle, Rangnick shared his thoughts with MUTV and Sky Sports, as well as in his press conference too.

"I think in the second half we showed a good reaction, a good reaction from the team. Even more so when we conceded the goal after 60 minutes. It was good to have an early reply to that goal two minutes later - a great assist by Nemanja Matic and a fantastic finish by Cristiano. In the first half we had problems to close down the spaces, we needed a few great saves from David and a few last-second tackles. In the second half, to start with, we pushed back Anthony Elanga almost like a left wing-back and in the last 15 minutes played with a back five with three central defenders. That gave us more control of the game."

SHOWING PRIDE

"Of course, we were missing eight players in total, so we only had 13 players from the professional team available and bearing that in mind, I thought we showed a good attitude, at least in the second half. We were also physically better and had more shape and more organisation to get more control. It was still far away from controlling and commanding the game, but against a top team like Chelsea, I still think in the second half, I was quite pleased with the performance."

CHELSEA'S STRENGTHS

"Obviously you could see that they are a top team. It is no coincidence that they won the Champions League last season. We were both not having that much confidence and quite a few players missing. We were without eight players who would have been starting XI players at one stage this season so it didn’t make it any easier. As I said, in the second half I think we showed a good reaction and in a way, although it was still a lucky draw, we earned it."

RONALDO'S PERFORMANCE

"[It was] not only the goal that he scored today, also his whole performance, his attitude. How often he helped in our own half. At the age of 37, a player like him, this is not normal to do that. He showed that today and if he plays like he did today he can still be a great help for this team."

GOALS FROM ELSEWHERE

"We have to be still fair with the players. We had quite a few other players scoring goals, I remember my first 10 games and we had 10 different goalscorers. It is how many opportunities can we create and how many goalscorers. Right now we very much rely on Cristiano, he also showed a good performance when Chelsea were in possession. There has to be a focus on bringing in a couple of new strikers for sure."

TACTICAL CHANGES

"We wanted at least a point and still had a chance to score ourselves in the last couple of minutes. I decided to bring on Phil Jones as they were causing us problems on their right side with Reece James and Mason Mount, so it was difficult for Alex Telles to get hold of that."

PRAISE FOR MATIC

"He’s got a top mentality, he’s a top-class professional player and that’s why I’m happy I could give him more game time in the last couple of weeks. For me, [it was] a very good performance by Nema."

ON THE ATMOSPHERE

"I thought the atmosphere was as [it] always [is], the supporters were behind the team as they are always trying to be behind us. I couldn’t feel any difference with the other home games that we have had so far."
