Ralf: Great opportunity for youngsters

Wednesday 09 February 2022 12:53

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick will be keeping an eye on the FA Youth Cup tie against Everton tonight (Wednesday).

Another game at Old Trafford provides valuable experience to lead coach Travis Binnion's side, who take on the Toffees in the 19:00 GMT kick-off, with the action live on MUTV in the UK.

Extra-time and penalties will come into effect, if required.

“Yes, it’s a great opportunity,” Ralf told MUTV's Mark Sullivan. “Before Christmas, I intended to watch one of those games but, due to COVID, it was not possible.

“It is a great opportunity to play in this famous stadium and hopefully they can win the game.”

The Under-18s reached this fifth-round stage with wins over Scunthorpe United, at the Theatre of Dreams, and away to Reading.

The quarter-final draw has already been made with either the Reds or Everton at home to Leicester City in a game to be played before 26 February. Chelsea knocked Liverpool out, while holders Aston Villa and Manchester City have also been eliminated.

The boss also explained that there is an equivalent competition in his homeland, with the final played in the capital.

“Yes, there is a German Youth Cup,” he said. “In the end, the two finalists play one day before the German Cup final in Berlin. But they don’t play in a big stadium, it’s in a smaller stadium, an amateur stadium in Berlin. A similar competition also exists in Germany.”
