Rangnick: Varane played his best game v Boro

Ralf Rangnick is pleased to have Raphael Varane fit and in form again after what he believes was the centre-back’s best performance in a Manchester United shirt so far.

Varane made his 17th appearance of what has been something of a stop-start campaign for him so far, during the Emirates FA Cup exit to Middlesbrough on Friday.

The France international had two spells on the sidelines with injury during the autumn but he has now started all six of United’s games in 2022.

Raphael Varane was unflustered by the hurly-burly of the FA Cup, as these short clips show...

Raphael impressed alongside Harry Maguire at Old Trafford against Chris Wilder’s side, with the Reds dominating play but unable to take our chances at the other end, apart from Jadon Sancho's first-half opener.

Our no.19 had to depart the field prior to extra time and was replaced by Phil Jones, but Ralf revealed there were no long-term effects and that he would be available against the Clarets.

The German now hopes to see more of the same from Varane in what is likely to be a physical contest with Burnley in East Lancashire.

“I think he has arrived, he seems to be physically fit, he has no issues with injuries anymore,” Rangnick told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“I thought until he had to be substituted against Middlesbrough, he did extremely well, together with Harry.

“He played probably his best game, knowing it was a Championship team but a very ambitious Championship team, and I'm happy to have him back for tomorrow's game.

“Hopefully we can have him in the same fitness shape and in the same form that he's played Middlesbrough for the next, upcoming games.”
