Varane explains how United nullified Spurs

While goals from Bruno Fernandes and Fred sealed Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, the defensive resilience of Erik ten Hag’s side was a joy to behold.

The partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez at the heart of our back four played a vital role in the Reds’ clean sheet, as dynamic duo Harry Kane and Heung-min Son were consigned to speculative efforts and half-chances.

Following the important victory – in which a 2-0 loss still arguably flattered the visitors – Varane explained how United snuffed out Spurs’ danger men and provided the foundations from which our own attacking players were allowed to flourish.

Raphael Varane expresses his pleasure after United's 2-0 over Spurs got Old Trafford rocking...

“We tried to press very high on the pitch, and it was a very good performance,” said the France international.

“We cut the connection with the two strikers they had and, especially, we killed the space in behind the defensive line, so it was a good performance.”

Rapha also praised his centre-back partner, Martinez, who has made quite the impact since his summer arrival from Ajax.

“I enjoy playing with him. He is a very good player,” Varane said of the Argentinian.

Varane was quick to point out that wasn’t just the work of the defence that allowed United to gain a foothold in the match and dominate proceedings, as the whole team worked together in perfect unison.

“It is very good for the defence to keep the clean sheet, but [the] teamwork [was] fantastic,” he said.

“I think we could see 11 players in the same tempo, very aggressive, very focused on the game, so it was a great performance.”

Lisandro Martinez has lauded his United team-mates, following our dominant display against Spurs...

When asked whether it was the best performance United have produced this season, he told club media: “Maybe, maybe.

“I think it was a very solid [performance], we created a lot of chances. We could have scored more goals, especially in the first half, we had the great chances.

“I think the pressing was very good and a good tempo, so it was great teamwork tonight.”
