Varane fitness update

Manchester United face a wait to see if Raphael Varane is added to the club's injury list.

The Frenchman was withdrawn at half-time of the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest, with the Reds trailing 2-1 at that point.

Victor Lindelof was introduced in place of the centre-back, after coming on for Lisandro Martinez at the same stage of our previous outing at Old Trafford, the 1-0 triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers in our opening game of 2023/24.

Reds complete biggest Ten Hag comeback

A dramatic afternoon at Old Trafford was turned into triumph.

During the post-match press conference, Ten Hag was asked about the fitness of Varane, with a trip to Arsenal, one of only two teams to finish above us in last season's Premier League, next on the agenda.

"He had complaints," revealed the manager. "So we didn't want to risk him. We know we have Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, good replacements.

"So we don't take the risk, but what the complaint is and if it is really bad, we don't know. We have to wait."

Maguire returned to the matchday squad, and was on the bench, after missing the defeat to Tottenham last weekend.

His fellow England defender, Luke Shaw, faces a spell on the sidelines, along with another Three Lions international in Mason Mount, while Netherlands left-back Tyrell Malacia is a further absentee.

However, it is hoped striker signing Rasmus Hojlund may be in a position to make his eagerly awaited debut next Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.
