Varane: Why the Premier League is the best
Raphael Varane believes the cosmopolitan nature of the Premier League helps to ensure it is the best in the world.
The Manchester United defender has had to overcome a couple of injury lay-offs since joining the Reds in the summer but has acclimatised well to life in England.
After playing the full duration of each of our five matches in all competitions since the turn of the year, the 28-year-old has also performed to a consistently high standard while operating with different centre-back partners.
Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have all appeared alongside him during this run of games.
Despite his experience of competing in France and Spain with Lens and Real Madrid, respectively, Varane is under no illusions about the strength of the Premier League.
During an exclusive interview with the latest edition of Inside United, he explained his reaction to playing in the English top-flight. “The intensity is very different,” he admitted. “The pace of the game is a really high level. It’s a great experience. I like the atmosphere around the stadiums.
“I like the mentality. It’s very intense but always in good spirit and very positive. This experience for me is great.”
One thing that is often mentioned in relation to the Premier League is the fact that even teams at the bottom of the table can upset the more fancied sides on any even given day.
The belief that there is never an easy ride is one that Varane subscribes to, having had a taste of just how tough the matches are and the points are never truly secure until the final whistle sounds.
“Yeah, the games are very difficult,” he stated. “You can’t be relaxed, you can be winning a game and you know if you have 10 minutes to play, anything can happen.
“I think it’s the best league in the world and the intensity is absolutely amazing. Every team has players with top quality.
“Tactically, it’s a very high level and there are a lot of players and coaches from everywhere. So it’s a mix about different cultures and different styles of players and of mentality.
“I think that is why the league is top because it's the best from everywhere, you know [laughs].”
