Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane has described scoring his first goal for the Reds as “an amazing sensation” after scoring in our final home match of the season against Brentford.

The Frenchman made it 3-0 after 72 minutes to seal the win for the Reds, adding to Bruno Fernandes’s first-half finish and Cristiano Ronaldo’s second-half penalty.

“I am very happy,” he told MUTV. “It is a very emotional day because it is the last game at home at Old Trafford this season.

“It was my first goal and a great victory today, so I’m very happy for this goal.”

Varane: It was an important moment

Raphael Varane was delighted to break his United duck, against Brentford, on Monday night...

Varane has already hit the back of the net this season for the Reds, but his header away to Burnley in February was ruled out for an offside infringement against Harry Maguire.

Against Brentford, the World Cup-winner’s goal came from another set-piece, as he managed to divert a volley past David Raya, in front of the Stretford End.

“It was very exciting,” he said. “For the first goal, it is always an important moment for the player in a new club, in front of these amazing fans.

“It was amazing; an amazing sensation.”

The defender was also quick to praise Cristiano Ronaldo, whom he also played with at Real Madrid, for scoring the Reds’ second goal, taking the Portuguese icon's Premier League goal tally for the season to 18.

He said: “I think he is a great professional and I think his talent is amazing. He will score goals, even with his age.

“With his hunger and talent, he can help the team and it’s amazing.”

At 37, Cristiano is continuing to keep statisticians busy with his exploits.

United have just two matches left of the season, travelling away to Brighton this weekend before facing Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on the final day.

While the Reds currently sit sixth in the league table, Varane is striving for maximum points in the final two fixtures.

“It is very important for us to finish well this season,” he said. “We know the fans back us, so we need to fight for them, and we need to keep pushing and fighting until the end for them.”

The Frenchman got on the scoresheet for the first time as a Red during the win over Brentford at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old has struggled with a couple of niggling injuries this season and hasn’t played as regularly as he would have hoped when he signed from Real Madrid in the summer.

Despite a disappointing season for the club, the centre-back shared his pride at being able to wear the Manchester United shirt, and his optimism for the future.

“Personally, it has been an amazing experience,” he said. “To be a player of Manchester United is something special.”

“Next season will be better. I hope to do a full pre-season to be fit and help the team as much as possible. I want to do the best for this club and for the fans.”
