Hojlund: A striker's role is developing

Rasmus Hojlund believes the centre-forward role has evolved over the past 10 or 15 years.

The Manchester United striker has acknowledged that the position is now the first line of defence in modern football, with a lot of effort made to prevent the opposition building out from the back.

Perhaps, in the past, the no.9 was expected to be at the sharp end and focus primarily on putting the ball in the net, but the game has clearly changed in terms of tactical approach.

In addition to pressing, there is a lot of onus on providing a physical presence in attack, holding the ball up and helping create space for team-mates.

These are all elements the youngster is keen to continue working on, as he adapts to life in the Premier League.

When asked by Inside United, the official club magazine, about all the attributes a well-rounded striker needs, he replied: "It's very important, especially the way the game is developing as well.

"The criteria for a striker is more demanding now than it was probably 10 or 15 years ago and, yeah, you need to be even more complete as a striker. I try to be that every day, in every sort of aspect, all of those things you just mentioned [pressing, work-rate, hold-up play, physical strength] are some of them.

"Pressing is also a big part of it, especially with this manager [Erik ten Hag]. He wants to put pressure on the other team and the other opponents. So, for me to do the whole process, it's very important for the team."

Hojlund says he is working in training to improve, as he looks to build on scoring in successive Premier League outings, with Newport County up next in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round on Sunday afternoon.

"Really, just everything," he answered, when we asked if there was anything specific he was working on at Carrington. "I try to work especially to be even better every day.

"I think that is key for a striker, if you want to score goals."
