Who will we play in the third round of the Carabao Cup?

Wednesday 25 August 2021 21:35

Manchester United will begin their Carabao Cup campaign for 2021/22 with a home tie against fellow Premier League club West Ham United.

Our first domestic cup outing of the new season will take place during the week commencing 20 September, though the precise date and kick-off time are yet to be confirmed.

The match with the Hammers follows just days after our trip to the London Stadium to face David Moyes's side in the Premier League (Sunday 19 September, kick-off 14:00 BST), and precedes our home match with Aston Villa the following Saturday (kick-off 15:00 BST).

When do United enter? Are there any rule changes? We’ve got everything you need to know…

Our tie is one of four all-Premier League clashes, with Chelsea hosting Aston Villa, Liverpool travelling to Norwich and Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur reprising their recent Premier League fixture at Molineux.

We've met West Ham on three occasions in this competition, winning twice and being eliminated once. The most recent clash came at the quarter-final stage in 2016/17, when doubles from both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial helped us progress 4-1. That season was, of course, the last campaign in which we lifted the League Cup – our fifth success to date.

We also hosted the Irons in a fifth-round FA Cup tie last season, where Scott McTominay's extra-time strike proved the difference.

United reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup in 2020/21, only to fall to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, the eventual winners. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the squad will be hoping to go one better when this year's edition gets under way.
