Who was United's Man of the Match against Everton?

Sunday 09 October 2022 22:00

Manchester United bounced back from conceding an early goal to defeat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park and return to winning ways in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

Erik ten Hag's side produced a largely commanding display against the Toffees, but had to recover from Alex Iwobi’s fifth-minute opener to take the all-important three points away from Merseyside.

First-half strikes from Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo turned the contest on its head, and despite Marcus Rashford having an effort ruled out in the second period, the Reds went on to win the game.

A number of United players put in impressive performances all over the field during the excellent 2-1 triumph, but who claimed our Man of the Match crown?

The winner of our fan poll was Cristiano Ronaldo, who replaced Anthony Martial midway through the first half and fired home what proved to be United’s winner - the 700th club goal of his glittering career.

The Portuguese icon looked lively throughout and could have added to his landmark strike, with a handful of other headers and efforts troubling Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal.

Ronaldo claimed 29 per cent of the votes cast on the United App and ManUtd.com, with the impressive Casemiro not far behind on 20 per cent.

The Brazilian made his first Premier League start for United at Goodison, partnering Christian Eriksen at the heart of our midfield.

Not only did our no.18 break up play effectively and provide the ‘bite’ that we have come to expect from his time with Real Madrid, but he also provided the assist for Ronaldo’s decisive goal.

Pinching the ball in midfield and unleashing the striker in behind with one crisp pass, Casemiro’s assist encapsulated both sides of his game and further highlighted how he will be a vital asset for Ten Hag this season. A worthy runner-up.

We break down the facts and figures behind Cristiano's latest career landmark.

Only one other Red got into double figures with their percentage of the vote and it was another Brazilian, Antony.

The dynamic winger brought United level with a cool finish on the break and was a threat on the right wing throughout the game.

What’s more, Antony scored in his third successive Premier League match since arriving from Ajax, and continues to sparkle every time he plays.

Completing the top five in our Man of the Match poll are Eriksen (eight per cent) and Rashford and Shaw (tied on seven per cent). Eriksen produced the same nonchalant and classy display that we are now used to in midfield, while Rashford was unfortunate to see his second-half effort ruled out for an apparent handball, following a VAR review.

Shaw looked resilient down the left after being given the nod ahead of Tyrell Malacia for this fixture, while also providing an attacking outlet for the Reds too.

United produced an important and characterful performance on the road, putting last weekend’s derby defeat even further behind us before we return to Old Trafford for back-to-back fixtures against Omonia and Newcastle United this week.

Congratulations to Cristiano on the award, and for achieving yet another landmark in your illustrious career!
