Roberto Carlos tips Shaw for the top

Luke Shaw's outstanding performances have led to him being called 'Shawberto Carlos' in some quarters and the player that nickname is derived from has now had his say on the Manchester United left-back.

Brazil legend Roberto Carlos, who starred for the likes of Internazionale and Real Madrid in his playing days, is due to take part in Soccer Aid at the Etihad Stadium on 4 September.

Ahead of the event, he told PA Sport that he shared a couple of key components of Shaw's game and thinks the impressive Red is only going to get better as Luke prepares for England's Euro 2020 semi-final with Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday night.

"You can see he’s very motivated," said Roberto Carlos. "He’s really improving, his performance against Ukraine was very good. He’s been an important part of this English team, along with all the others.

“He’s been improving each game and I think he’s got everything to get to the top. He’s the left-back for England and that, in itself, says a lot.”

"I don’t like comparing [players]," added the 48-year-old, who won 125 caps for Brazil.

“It’s two completely different periods in football. I had my time and now he’s having his.

“Similarities I think could be that he has strength and the desire to win, just like I did.”

Shaw contributed two assists in the 4-0 win over Ukraine at the weekend, for Harry Maguire and Harry Kane, to take his tally in the tournament to three after he teed up Raheem Sterling for the opener in the 2-0 triumph over Germany in the round-of-16 encounter.

Although Kieran Trippier started the opening fixture with Croatia in an unfamiliar position, Luke has since been named in the XI ahead of Chelsea's Ben Chilwell, who did have a period of enforced isolation after coming into contact with Billy Gilmour, when the Scotland international tested positive for COVID-19.

With Italy's Leonardo Spinazzola, another outstanding performer at Euro 2020, suffering a serious Achilles injury in the quarter-final win over Belgium, it will be interesting to see if Luke is named in the Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament. This is certainly looking likelier with each accomplished display.
