Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has been appointed as Heerenveen's new head coach.

The ex-Netherlands international, who was top scorer when we last won the Premier League title in 2012/13, has spent time at Carrington, with Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff, while learning his new trade.

The 40-year-old has signed for the next two seasons with a side currently 10th in the table as he takes his first step in management.

There is one game remaining this term but he is taking the helm for 2024/25.

Van Persie took up coaching after retiring in 2019 and has been working at another of his former teams in Feyenoord.

The Dutchman is due to be presented to the media at his new club next Tuesday but has already granted an interview to Heerenveen's official website.

"I would like to continue my development and the role of head coach fits in perfectly with that goal," he said.

"I am, therefore, pleased with the opportunity that Heerenveen offers me. Heerenveen is a very nice Eredivisie club, with a rich tradition and loyal supporters.

"It is a fantastic challenge to contribute to the sporting ambitions and development of the club as head coach."

Best of luck in your new role, Robin, from everybody at United!
