Confirmed: United's team to face FCSB

Thursday 30 January 2025 18:45

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has named his team to take on Romanian champions FCSB in tonight's UEFA Europa League clash (20:00 GMT kick-off).

The Reds know that a win in our final game of the league phase this evening will be enough to automatically qualify for the last 16, although a draw or a loss could see us fall out of the 36-team table's top eight and go into the knockout round play-offs.

While speaking to MUTV on Wednesday, Amorim reiterated that securing a top-eight finish is a crucial target to hit on our trip to Bucharest, and the boss has made five changes to his side as we look to fulfil that objective.

The first of those alterations from Sunday's Premier League win at Fulham comes in goal, where Altay Bayindir - who played our last European outing against Rangers seven days ago - replaces Andre Onana between the sticks.

In defence, Noussair Mazraoui could swap wing-back for centre-back this evening and join fellow weekend starters Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez in the defensive line, while Tyrell Malacia returns to the XI to flank the left side with Diogo Dalot expected to be on the right.

Midfielders Toby Collyer, Christian Eriksen and Kobbie Mainoo are also restored and should join captain Bruno Fernandes in the middle of the park. It remains to be seen, however, which pair will play deeper and which two will line up further forward, if we are to set up in Amorim's favoured 3-4-2-1 system.

Up front, Rasmus Hojlund continues, aiming to add to his joint-competition-leading tally of five goals in this season's Europa League.

Speaking to MUTV's Mark Sullivan ahead of the game at the National Arena, Ruben provided an insight into tonight's selection and held back from confirming that it will be Eriksen and Fernandes lining up just behind Hojlund, in the attacking-midfield positions.

“Tying to create connections between players is always hard, but they are ready to play the game. We have to protect some players that are playing every minute, so we have to sometimes make a change and prove to all the team that trust in them. We are ready to win the game.”

“You guys will see [maybe it’s not Eriksen and Fernandes in the positions behind Hojlund]. We want to improve with the ball and that square can keep the ball, they can create chances. In the final third, we know they are midfielders so they have to think about the goal and they are capable of scoring goals also.”
