Amorim's post-match press conference after Forest defeat

Saturday 07 December 2024 21:36

Ruben Amorim said that Manchester United will "continue as a team" following Saturday's Premier League defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

The second Forest goal caught Andre Onana off guard when it swerved at the last second, but Amorim highlighted how our no.24 was a stand-out performer during last month's draw with Ipswich Town when the topic was raised at the post-match press conference.

Amorim also addressed conceding from a corner again following the midweek clash with Arsenal, his reasons for not starting Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee after recent goals, and why Bruno Fernandes was withdrawn before the end.

Ruben: We had more heart than quality

Ruben Amorim has his say on the defeat to Forest, citing the challenge created by conceding early in both halves...

CAN YOU EXPLAIN FOREST'S SECOND GOAL?

"We lost the ball in one position, a lot of open space, and then they scored. All the team suffered that goal. Onana already saved us a lot of times, so we have to find a way when this happens to Onana, or to Altay [Bayindir] or Tom [Heaton] to turn around and score two goals. The same way that he saved us, for example, against Ipswich.

"We have to continue as a team, we have to improve in all aspects of the game."

CONCEDING FROM A CORNER AGAIN

"When this happens, it's more my fault because I'm responsible. We try to do it in the best way. We did a lot of work in this area because we saw it against Arsenal. It was really hard in this context, suffering in the first play [of the game], to put energy into the team but we managed to do it. We were drawing the game, but then in the second half, the same thing.

"Then you feel it in everybody, the fans, the players…it's really hard to transmit something, like continue to your job. We managed to score one more but then it was more like we wanted [to score again], but there was not a lot of quality."

WHY RASHFORD AND ZIRKZEE DIDN'T START

"Every game is a new history, so you have to focus on the opponent and what you see in training and games. Every detail counts.

"You want to use different players with different characteristics. When we see an opponent, we imagine what kind of game. That is the reason. Rasmus [Hojlund] also scored two goals [against Bodo/Glimt] and then went to the bench [against Everton]. We try to find the best team to win matches."

THINKING BEHIND BRUNO SUBSTITUTION

"I understand that Bruno is a danger near the box, he'd scored one goal, but he was tired with transition. I could let Bruno Fernandes [stay on], but I felt with Mason Mount, he is also good with set-pieces and can score because he's very technical, and we needed fresh legs. If you saw the game: transitions, so if you lose the ball and suffer another goal, it was over. So I used all the substitutions.

"With a lot of games, I felt Bruno was a little bit tired. I had Mason Mount and tried to put him and Josh nearer Rasmus to try something in the end."

A TOUGH FEW DAYS

"We already knew it will be a long journey. But we want to win because this is a massive club and you feel it. When you lose one game, it is really hard for everybody and I can understand that. I can feel it in the stadium after the first goal.

"We understand the context, but we have to keep in the same way, doing the same things. The same words that I had after Everton, I have today. Continue to focus on the performance. We need to improve a lot of aspects of the game and continue to do things in training."

HOW IS YOUR MENTALITY NOW?

"I had this and worse at Sporting in the beginning. The feeling for me is the same [as back then]. For the world, it's completely different. Sporting are known in Portugal, but Manchester United has a lot of attention. But for me, it's the same feeling.

"I had this experience at Sporting. If you are a little bit experienced in football, this happened at a lot of clubs. We have to continue to do the same things and improve the team because this will turn around. We need time and to continue to work in the same way every day."

CENTRE-BACKS' PASSING IN FIRST HALF

"We suffered a goal and then we went forward and managed to have a [positive] situation. In the middle [and towards] the end of the first half, we played just with central defenders. They are trying to reach the perfect solution and need time to train. We are in the beginning, just two weeks, and the focus is don't lose the ball with sloppy passes and they are trying to do that.

"I know that they have to have more confidence, not just to take the ball, but to put the ball between the lines. We did it for the first goal like that. They are trying to do everything perfect to find the right solution but then, sometimes against low blocks, you have to take the risk and we are on this path."
