Amorim: We have to fight for our lives

Monday 30 December 2024 23:10

Ruben Amorim says it is important to be honest about Manchester United's current predicament with the players and supporters.

Our head coach has pledged everybody will fight to ensure the Reds do not slip further down the table and begin to look nervously over our shoulders towards the bottom sides.

A 2-0 home reverse to Newcastle United, following first-half headers by Alexander Isak and Joelinton, made for an unhappy end to 2024 in front of our own supporters, with tough tests to come at Liverpool in the Premier League and Arsenal in the Emirates FA Cup third round.

TOUGH TIMES

"It's really hard. It's one of the worst moments in the history of our club. You have to accept another loss in front of our supporters and Newcastle were better. We suffer two goals and, in this moment, it's hard to turn around the result. It's a very difficult moment for everyone, so we have to continue to do our job. There is no other way."

WHAT WENT WRONG

“It was really difficult. They started the game very well and we [conceded] a goal, really nervous. Then the second goal, really early in the game. It was really hard for us. They were better than us. Even during all the game, they controlled. We were better in the second half but that was because my players tried, really tried. But they are, like I said, better than us and they won the game."

ZIRKZEE'S SUBSTITUTION

"That is really simple for everyone. When the game starts and finishes, it's simple to address. The idea was different. For Josh, it was a really difficult moment for him. I felt I had to do something in that moment. It was a really hard moment for Josh and I don't like to do that for my players. I felt he was suffering. I was thinking about the team and I'm really sorry for Josh."

RASHFORD NOT INTRODUCED

"Every player on the bench is close to going on the pitch."

IS CONFIDENCE LOW?

"Yeah and you can feel it in every single day but that is a bad thing, of course, but it's a good thing they are feeling like that. We have to understand we're in a very difficult moment. It's really hard for them, sometimes, on the pitch, to have these losses but we have to continue. There is no other way. We have to work hard and prepare for the next games."

CAN WE GET DRAGGED INTO A BATTLE TO BEAT THE DROP?

"I think it's a possibility. We have to be clear with our fans. We have to change something and this season will be really hard on everybody. It can make us stronger and we have to fight. I'm really concerned. If you see the league, it's really tough and every team has the possibility to win games. We have to be honest with our supporters and, especially, our players. We will fight for our lives."

HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THINGS?

“Training. Just using every minute of the training to try to improve the team to give them that base to cope with every moment of the game. Improve all aspects, the way we should work all the time.”

ANFIELD NEXT UP

"Yeah, it’s another big game, but we will use every minute of training to prepare for that game and to give some information, and to work on our way of playing, to try to improve our team. That’s the only thing."
