Amorim comments on United's January transfer plans

Manchester United will “try to do something” during the January transfer window, head coach Ruben Amorim told journalists in Friday’s press conference.

Addressing the media for the first time in 2025, Amorim was primarily previewing Sunday’s Premier League fixture at Liverpool.

United are aiming to turn around a run of disappointing festive form, which saw us lose three consecutive league matches, against Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle United.

As well as a slightly quieter fixture schedule, which will allow Amorim a chance to regularly work with his full squad on the training ground for the first time since his November arrival, January offers the opportunity to bring in fresh faces.

Ruben Amorim provided an update on Harry's future during his latest press conference.

The meticulous work at Carrington is seen by the boss as the major focus, rather than the transfer market.

However, when asked about the potential of any moves happening, Amorim told reporters: “When the window is open, we can try to do something and we will try to do something. But I think, in the next weeks, we are going to have more time to train and we can improve, that’s the only way.

"We had a lot of games without training, now we will have more space to grow. You can see that the context is worse in this moment, as we had a lot of losses, so we have to manage everything."

He wasn’t, however, pushed on which positions in the squad he’d like to have additional resource in.

“I will keep that to myself,” he said. “But we'll try to do something.”

Before the turn of the year, Amorim had indicated to reporters that major activity in the transfer window was unlikely.

"It's not the case I am not arriving here and I can spend a lot of money, changing all the team,” he explained.

There has been some news already, with Ruben confirming that centre-back Harry Maguire has had a one-year contract extension triggered by the club.

The window closes on 3 February at 23:00 GMT.
