McTominay embracing Erik's ideas

Scott McTominay has enjoyed the different challenge of playing under Erik ten Hag this season.

A valuable component of Manchester United’s squad, Scott made 39 appearances across all competitions as the Reds won the Carabao Cup and qualified for next season’s Champions League.

Our no.39 has been deployed by the Dutchman in various positions in midfield, from a defensive sitter to a more attacking no.10.

There has even been examples of McTominay operating as a false nine off the bench and, wherever he plays, Scott is always eager to face up to the task and think about football in a different way.

Scott McTominay looks back on the 2022/23 season, in which he made 39 appearances, scoring 3 goals…

“Obviously, the transition in terms of his style is very, very different to some other coaches, but, as I say, that’s football,” McTominay said.

“He’s always having you thinking, and having you think about new ideas and stuff like that.

“It’s good, that’s the best way to be with football: open-minded and going into every game, if he asks you to do something, you do it to the best of your abilities and you try to learn it as best as you can. I think, for me, it’s great. I love it.”

McTominay scored three times for United in 2022/23, following up injury-time efforts against Omonia Nicosia and Aston Villa in the autumn with the opening goal during a 2-0 win over Everton in April.

That strike against the Toffees followed on from a double for Scotland versus Spain in what was a real purple patch for Scott before an unfortunate spell on the sidelines.

He wants to add more goals from midfield going forward but, for now, will enjoy his summer break – around participating for Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifiers.

“Every goal that you score is special but, like you say, I should score more goals than I do,” Scott added.

“I do get into good positions and I can shoot left foot and right foot, which, obviously, I’m confident to do. I feel like the more opportunities you get to play, the more that can come out.

“When you’re on your holidays, you need to relax and take it easy, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I’m someone who loves football and I love this club.

“Whatever happens and however many minutes you play, I’m still going to train hard every single day and give my best for the team and always be there, contribute with some goals every now and again, maybe when you come on, but I feel like, for myself, it’s keep your head down and keep working.”
