McTominay keen to take place in history

Saturday 03 June 2023 08:59

Scott McTominay says the current Manchester United side are driven by the prospect of taking a unique place in club history on Saturday.

The Reds have won 12 Emirates FA Cups and six Carabao Cups, but never before have we claimed both prizes in the same campaign.

With the Carabao Cup already wrapped up following February’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United at Wembley, Erik ten Hag’s men now return to the same stadium ahead of arguably the most anticipated FA Cup final in recent years.

Manchester City are the opposition, with the Blues still aiming for a treble of trophies this season, but Scott sees the focus as being on ourselves and what we can achieve, rather than stopping others.

McTominay: We know we can win at Wembley

Scott McTominay says United have the hunger and belief to win at Wembley for the third time this season…

“Course it is,” he replied, when asked if a potential domestic-cup double was extra motivation.

“The other side of it was the game against Fulham and the motivation to win there was to tie the most wins at home [in a season: 27], which is important for us and which is important for the manager and his staff.

“It’s a great honour and responsibility to be a part of history at this football club and that’s what we all want as players.

“We want to be involved in that and I feel like that’s the best way to push forwards: to have little targets that you want to set and achieve.”

Despite train strikes across the country this weekend, an electric atmosphere is expected in north London on Saturday, with the ground split equally between Reds and Blues.

Scott's family, the majority of whom are born-and-bred United fans, will be present to cheer the team on, alongside tens of thousands of others who have been there through what has been a mammoth season.

McTominay, who has been at the club since he was five, has always felt a strong relationship with our supporters and is keen to repay the faith at Wembley.

“I’ve felt the bond ever since I’ve been a kid and went to watch games,” McTominay added.

In Saturday’s final, the Reds will be pursuing a particular domestic-cup feat that we’ve never achieved before.

“There’s always been that bond with the squad, no matter whether it’s the good times, the bad times.

“Now we’re doing really, really well: we’ve won one cup final, we’re in another [and] top-four and the Champions League, which is amazing for us.

“I feel like that’s the way it is: the fans are behind us whatever the weather, but especially this season I feel like they’ve been there for every single game, from minute one until the last.

“They’re the best fans in the world, by a mile.”
