Reguilon: It's different to Spain!

Tuesday 26 December 2023 08:15

Playing on Boxing Day is a tradition of English football that Manchester United full-back Sergio Reguilon says he enjoys, as we look ahead to welcoming Aston Villa to Old Trafford.

The Spain international is currently on loan with the Reds from Tottenham Hotspur and has made 10 appearances so far for Erik ten Hag’s side, across the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Sergio used to watch our festive programme from afar but playing at this time of year is something he admits he has had to get used to, since moving from Real Madrid to Spurs back in 2020.

“Yeah, always,” he replied, when we asked whether he relished the Christmas action.

Fans' Q&A: Sergio Reguilon

Sergio Reguilon answers a wide range of questions from supporters in our popular feature...

“When I was in Spain, I always looked at the Boxing Day [fixtures] because every other league stops but the Premier League carries on,” he told club media.

“Always my Christmas was with my family, but when you play in England that changes and you have to forget this and play football.

“In Spain you break around 23 or 24 [December] and after you come back at, I don't know, 30, 31 [December] and it's a little bit different.”

United’s first Boxing Day fixture for three years sees us entertain high-flying Villa, who have enjoyed an impressive year under Unai Emery.

The Villans have the second-best record among top-flight clubs in 2023, after Manchester City, and have made an unlikely bid for the title following a strong first half of the campaign.

Reguilon is well aware of the work done by his compatriot and believes the Reds are in for a tough test at Old Trafford.

The Reds attended MUDSA’s annual dinner to meet dedicated and inspiring fans.

“I think Aston Villa is doing a really good job,” he added.

“I know the coach from Spain, from many teams and I think they can become a strong team.

“This is a really good fight to see.”
