Luke Shaw

Who confronted Shaw after his award win?

It seems Luke Shaw has stirred things up at the Aon Training Complex by being named Manchester United's Player of the Month - an award that Bruno Fernandes had previously monopolised.

Fernandes claimed four of the five accolades available to him last season after his January arrival and he picked up another two in November and December this term, as the Portuguese midfielder's sparkling form continued to flow.

Nine goal involvements across eight games made our no.18’s case for February's prize very strong, but he was beaten in the fan vote by Daniel James and eventual winner Shaw, who is flying at the moment.

We caught up with Luke on Friday, to present him with his gong and the left-back revealed that Fernandes has jokingly agreed to ‘let him’ have his moment in the sun, after so many wins - especially after he was nominated for the Premier League's award, too!

“He came up to me when I’d won it and he was like ‘how have you won this?’” Shaw told us.

“I said ‘it’s the fans that pick it, no-one at the club. You have to understand that!’ “He was like ‘Ah, it’s okay, someone else needs to win it sometime.’

“He’s up for the Premier League Player of the Month award, so he’s quite confident he can win that. I’m hoping he can win it, because obviously I took this one!”

Luke polled 37 per cent of the vote to take his first monthly accolade since the 2018/19 season, when he was also recognised as the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.

The former Southampton man admitted that winning supporters' polls is always sweet and especially so this time considering the competition he was up against.

“I think that’s what makes it a bit better – that it’s the fans who choose it and they’re recognising the work I’m putting in,” Shaw continued.

“It might have been a tough vote because the players that were up for it had also had a very good month.

“Bruno has a good month every month, with what he does! Scotty [McTominay] was very good and of course, Daniel James picking up his form and getting back to what we know he can do. It was really good to see.

“Anyone could have won it to be honest, but like I said it’s nice to be picked at the top by the fans.”
