Snapdragon-powered preview of Villa clash
Manchester United return to Old Trafford on Sunday, as we host Aston Villa in a fixture that has historically favoured the Reds and could prove pivotal in the race for UEFA Champions League football.

United have won six of out last eight league matches, including eye-catching victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, while also picking up wins against Fulham, Everton and Crystal Palace. A draw away to West Ham United and a narrow defeat at Newcastle United are the only dropped points during the run.
United have scored 15 goals across those eight matches - averaging close to two per game - while Old Trafford has once again become a difficult venue for visiting teams.
Historically, this fixture has strongly favoured United. Across 201 meetings in all competitions, the Reds have won the vast majority of encounters, 107 to be exact, in comparison to Villa’s 52. In the Premier League, Villa have managed just six victories in 61 meetings. United have also been particularly dominant at Old Trafford, where our attacking record against Villa has regularly delivered goals and results.
That said, Villa arrive with ambitions of their own. They remain firmly in the mix for European qualification and have shown they can produce decisive moments, particularly on the counterattack. However, recent results have highlighted some inconsistencies, with defeats and defensive issues interrupting their momentum.
It's never just about the game

Lisandro Martinez said: "There are moments when Vila press high and moments when they like to counterattack, they play amazing football and have some of the best players in the league in their team."
From a tactical perspective, the battle in midfield could be decisive. United’s ability to circulate the ball quickly and progress through captain Bruno Fernandes will be tested by Villa’s compact shape and transitional threat, key qualities in an Unai Emery side.
Fernandes, averaging over three key passes per game, remains the creative heartbeat of the team, linking midfield and attack and consistently unlocking opposition defences.
"The most important thing is the desire and the way we move in the box, to score the goals, and I think we have been very very good at that recently," said Fernandes.
As a team, United’s underlying numbers reflect our growing control in matches. The Reds rank among the league’s most productive attacking sides, highlighting our ability to create high-quality chances on a regular basis.
There are also encouraging signs in United’s attacking depth. The team has shared goals across the forward line in recent weeks, making the side less predictable and harder to defend against.
"It can show you how football can change and how it can evolve. You can see how important set-plays have been for most teams this season and how long throws are becoming a big part of the game," explained Diogo Dalot.
As the season enters its decisive phase, matches like this carry added significance. A victory would not only extend United’s strong run of form but also reinforce our credentials in the race for the top four.
Backed by the Old Trafford crowd and with momentum on our side, United will be aiming to continue the upward trajectory - and maintain our dominance in this historical fixture.
