Early team news for AZ Alkmaar v United

Tuesday 01 October 2019 07:00

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Anthony Martial will not return to the side in time for Thursday’s Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar.

The Frenchman has missed the last five Manchester United games with a hamstring injury, including Monday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the Premier League.

Speaking after that encounter at Old Trafford, the boss revealed our no.9 will not be back for the trip to the Netherlands.

“Maybe the weekend [against Newcastle United, he will be back] but if not, after the weekend. Definitely not Thursday,” Ole said in his post-match press conference.

Another who missed the meeting with the Gunners was Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with the full-back absent after coming down with a dose of tonsillitis.

It was the first league game of the season that the defender has been unavailable for, and Ole admitted he is unsure whether our summer signing will have recovered in time for trip to face AZ.

Axel Tuanzebe played at left-back on Monday and remains an option for that position.

"We know this team are going to be improving and I thought we saw some excellent performances: Scotty [McTominay], Andreas [Pereira]," added the boss. "You can see Axel is going to be a top player. There are some very positive things

"I think that showed by him playing well against [Nicolas] Pepe. I think Pepe is a threat and Axel did really well. We’ve had a few injuries and illnesses, so that was my decision when Aaron wasn’t fit to play."

Ole discussed the fitness of Martial during his post-match press conference on Monday.

Phil Jones is also set to miss the Europa League clash after he picked up a knock in last week’s Carabao Cup shoot-out victory over Rochdale. However, Diogo Dalot and Angel Gomes could return after the pair were both unavailable for the last two games due to injury.

Ole made nine changes to his side for our first Europa League game of the group - a 1-0 win over Astana last month - and he may opt to make changes against Alkmaar.

For the latest update on team news, be sure to tune in to the manager’s pre-match press conference on Wednesday, which will be broadcast live from the Netherlands via MUTV.
