Mason Greenwood

Ole on what Mason can add before Leipzig clash

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed forward Mason Greenwood to keep on improving.

The 19-year-old netted his first Premier League goal of the season, and his 20th for the Reds in total, during Saturday’s 3-1 win over West Ham at the London Stadium.

Greenwood may once again be called upon for the crucial Champions League clash with RB Leipzig in Germany, as Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial have been ruled out due to injury.

And Solskjaer believes that the Bradford-born striker’s excellent composure in front of goal and ability to work something out of nothing will only serve to aid us, as we attempt to secure at least a point that will see us through to the last-16.

Mason found an emphatic finish at the London Stadium last season...

“Mason is a very talented forward,” Ole told reporters.

“He’s one of the best finishers I’ve worked with and, when we can provide chances for him, or he creates chances for himself with his movement, we’ve got a good chance of scoring goals.

“He’s still young and he’s still learning, but he’ll only improve with the quality of experience and the characters that we have around him, in and around the team.

“It’s exciting to work with him.”

Solskjaer said that Tuesday’s game was an opportunity for the players to show why they’re at United.

Going into big European ties with qualification on the line is something the Norwegian was used to as a player, but he thinks it’s a situation we can thrive in.

“Of course, knockout games like this, that mean if you can go through or not, are big,” Ole added.

“They’re Man United players because they have qualities we’ve looked for. I’m sure tomorrow night will prove that’s the reason why they’re here. They’ll show it.

“The character of the group is getting better and better and we’re looking forward to the game.

“It’s something we want, games like this. It’s a tradition for Man United. We never make it easy for ourselves. We look at the game against Istanbul [Basaksehir], where we could have taken three points, but that’s just the way we do things.

“We do make it hard for ourselves, that’s been the case since I played and that’s a long, long time ago.”
