The story of Tommy Heron's Old Trafford return

Tuesday 19 August 2025 10:00

Our recent friendly against Fiorentina saw the return of one high-profile former Red, David De Gea. But high up in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand sat another notable figure who wore the shirt: Tommy Heron.

The Scot made just three appearances after signing in March 1958, one month after the Munich Air Disaster.

Our records suggest he is one of the oldest United players alive.

Tommy made his debut against Preston North End in April ’58, alongside Busby Babes Bobby Charlton and Bill Foulkes, before moving to York City in 1961.

Tommy was introduced to Amad and our players in the tunnel.

We were delighted to welcome 89-year-old Tommy back to Old Trafford for the Fiorentina fixture, hosting his family in the Director’s Box on the table of his longtime friend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Chief executive Omar Berrada and club legends Denis Irwin and Bryan Robson stopped by for a chat, making sure he enjoyed his day back at the match.

In a lovely moment ahead of kick-off, Tommy was introduced to the crowd by stadium announcer Alan Keegan, and our supporters rose to applaud his presence.

Fittingly, our special guest enjoyed the match from Sir Matt Busby’s old seat.

“My boots are in the car,” he joked with club staff, “but I think I’ll only make the bench, with all these new signings!”

Later, Tommy was personally greeted by De Gea, Amad and even our new signing Benjamin Sesko, whose arrival had been officially announced earlier that day.

The Slovenian told Tommy he was proud that the club’s history connected them.

It was an honour and a pleasure to have Tommy back at Old Trafford.
