Talking points from Stamford Bridge

Friday 05 April 2024 10:00

Manchester United fought back from two goals down to lead 3-2 at Chelsea on Thursday night, before the hosts rallied very late on to snatch the points from Erik ten Hag's side in dramatic fashion.

Conor Gallagher and former Manchester City forward Cole Palmer put the hosts in control in the first half, before quickfire goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes hauled the Reds level heading into the interval.

A tense second half looked to have been edged by Garnacho's close-range header, from Antony's superb pass, but a second Palmer penalty of the evening and a last-gasp drive from the England international clinched the 4-3 victory for Mauricio Pochettino's men.

The immediate feelings for United will be pain and disappointment but, while the result and nature of the defeat is far from what Ten Hag will have wanted, there were still plenty of positive points arising from our trip to Stamford Bridge.

GARNA STARS AGAIN

Alejandro Garnacho started on the left side of United's attack, with Marcus Rashford rested on the bench, and provided the spark to ignite our comeback from two goals down.

The Argentina international pounced on Moises Caicedo's rogue pass before driving forward and slotting past Dorde Petrovic, bringing the Reds to within a goal of the hosts. Garnacho then laid the ball off to Diogo Dalot moments later, before the Portuguese full-back brilliantly crossed to compatriot Bruno Fernandes to head United level.

In the second half, Alejandro arrived at the back post and showed great desire and bravery to head the ball past Petrovic from Antony's searching ball. It deserved to be the winning goal, but it wasn't to be our night.

ALL-ACTION ANTONY

When Erik named his starting XI for the match at Stamford Bridge, one talking point was the inclusion of Antony in the United line-up - a reward for his recent goal from the bench against Liverpool.

The Brazilian was unfortunate to clip Marc Cucurella for the penalty that led to Chelsea doubling their lead to 2-0, but he recovered from that incident and soon atoned for it by providing a superb cross-field ball in the build-up to Bruno Fernandes's leveller. And of course, he exquisitely assisted Garnacho for the second-half header that edged the Reds ahead.

Antony looked heartbroken at the final whistle but he can certainly take some positives from his own performance.

MOUNT BACK AT THE BRIDGE

When Mason Mount got up from the bench to be introduced in the 85th minute, there were a few boos from the Chelsea supporters around the dugout.

As the fourth official put his board up to signal his introduction, the dissenting voices increased in volume as the Stamford Bridge faithful refused to welcome their former midfielder with open arms.

At that point, the Reds were leading and Mason was on track for a winning return. Sadly, his former club would go on to have the last laugh.
