Team news for Liverpool clash

Friday 22 October 2021 12:56

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted there are a few knocks to contend with ahead of the visit of Liverpool on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford and Fred were both withdrawn after going down with problems in the second half of the stirring 3-2 win over Atalanta in the Champions League, with the manager revealing afterwards that Rashford, who scored our first goal, suffered a dead leg.

There have also been reports that Bruno Fernandes was hobbling in the wake of the tie, after he contributed two assists, and the boss has confirmed our no.18 is a doubt for the clash.

Anthony Martial is still working on his fitness after returning unfit from international duty with France but the striker has been training and could be given the opportunity to add to his recent goal against Liverpool's Merseyside rivals Everton.

Centre-back Raphael Varane has also been absent with a groin injury since helping Les Bleus win the UEFA Nations League.

"We've had some knocks, which you expect during games," Ole told MUTV's Stewart Gardner. "That's good, that we get some players giving everything, and then we just have to assess them. I'm not going to rule anyone out from Sunday but I'm not sure if everyone's going to be fit. Anthony is still working on his fitness, hopefully he's come through today and let's see how he is tomorrow."

The manager clarified the situation a little further when addressing questions from journalists at his press conference.

"Games like Wednesday will always bring knocks and bruises," Ole added. "We have two or three with knocks but I hope I can pick from a fit squad. Bruno might be a doubt but he's doing everything he can to be fit.

"I can't say if Fred will be fit or not. We might have the whole squad fit but may miss two or three. We'll see."

There will be no Thiago Alcantara in the visitors' midfield as he has joined Harvey Elliott on the sidelines.

Curtis Jones has trained and should be in contention to be involved at Old Trafford.

"The squad is alright," Jurgen Klopp said at his press conference. "We have to see, that's how it is. We are only two days after the [Atletico Madrid] game and we have to make sure that we all get fit again, but they are the typical things. I couldn't tell you now who is 100 per cent available and who is not.

"Just what's clear is that Curtis will train today with us the full session, that's the plan. And Thiago not. So, these are the two things I know for the moment."
