Team news for United v Liverpool

Tuesday 12 July 2022 06:33

Every pre-season game - starting with United v Liverpool (14:00 BST today) - will be shown live on MUTV, now available in our app and on ManUtd.com.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will soon be selecting his first starting XI, for the opening Tour 2022 game against Liverpool in Bangkok.

"We have just started, some players only one week, so we now have to construct a team, we have to construct a way of playing," said Ten Hag. "So, we are really short in pre-season [so far]. We achieved something but we have to develop a lot more."

"The standard of Manchester United is to win every game so we will start with that in our mind. We will be determined, and we are happy to play this game in Bangkok for many, many fans."

A number of players missed the open training session at the Rajamangala Stadium, with Axel Tuanzebe, Raphael Varane, James Garner and Scott McTominay undertaking gym work as part of their bespoke programmes.

It is likely the boss will use the opportunity to have a look at most of his squad during the course of the 90 minutes, which could mean a maiden appearance for new signing Tyrell Malacia, with the Bangkok Centenary Cup up for grabs.

There is no limit on the number of substitutions allowed.

LIVERPOOL'S TEAM NEWS

Jurgen Klopp must contend without Sadio Mane after the forward was sold to Bayern Munich over the summer. However, Mohamed Salah has signed a new contract and new striker Darwin Nunez is also in line for a potential first outing, although he complained of a foot problem in the open training session on Monday afternoon.

"Usually, football matches are the most important thing for us but, in this specific case, it is really more for the people," said Klopp at a press conference. "We brought here 37 players, so we have all generations here and we have to use all of them because the boys who were on international duty in the summer only arrived today, pretty much, and they cannot play too long, but we will try to give them a few minutes as well.

"So, it will be really exciting. Manchester United, a new manager, trained a little bit longer than us so might be, I’m not sure, in a better situation in the moment. But we see it as an important test because it’s against United and we don’t play friendlies, obviously both teams don’t play friendlies against each other, so we will see what we can do."
