Team news for United v FC Copenhagen

Monday 23 October 2023 12:25

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided a brief team news update, ahead of the Reds' must-win UEFA Champions League meeting with FC Copenhagen tomorrow evening.

The Reds are still searching for our first points in Group A, following defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, and victory is surely required if we are to progress beyond this season's group stage.

Ahead of what is likely to be a hugely emotional evening at Old Trafford, following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, Ten Hag stated how Sergio Reguilon may be available again to ease his defensive concerns.

Reguilon had trained last week and was hoping to return during Saturday's 2-1 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, only to be struck down by illness.

“Sergio, he got ill for Saturday so he was fit. He trained all week last week and yesterday [Sunday] he was back in part training,” Ten Hag said.

“Today he will train and then we have to assess if he is ready and game fit or if he can be involved in the squad. We have to wait for that.”

In Reguilon's absence, and with Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw still injured, Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof have been playing out of position at left-back.

Lindelof featured there at the weekend and provided the assist for Diogo Dalot's winning goal in South Yorkshire on Saturday, and Dalot has also filled in on the left flank at times this campaign, although he has been required to play at right-back recently with Aaron Wan-Bissaka sidelined.

Erik said on Friday that Wan-Bissaka is not 'too far away' from returning, while he also suggested that Kobbie Mainoo would get some minutes following his own recovery from injury.

Although Raphael Varane returned to the team as a late substitute on Saturday, Jonny Evans departed the field with an injury and there has been no update on the Northern Irishman.

Defenders Malacia, Shaw and Lisandro Martinez are still out, as is winger Amad, while Casemiro is suspended for this tie as he recovers from a knock sustained during international duty.

FC COPENHAGEN TEAM NEWS

Young midfielder William Clem will miss the game with a broken foot, while Birger Meling, who is awaiting a scan, and former Cardiff City forward Andreas Cornelius haven't made the trip.

“Andreas is not coming to Manchester, but it has long been planned and he is not injured,” said boss Jacob Neestrup. “He has had a really good 14 days on the training ground and played 35 good minutes against Vejle, and as part of his dosage, he is training individually at home the next few days and with the team on Thursday and Friday so that he can be in the squad again against Hvidovre on Saturday. We find these inclusions and exclusions necessary to ensure his return as best as possible.”

Veteran centre-back Nicolai Boilesen hasn’t featured since August, although he did make an appearance for the club’s reserves last week and has been named in the 23-man travelling squad.

Rasmus Hojlund could be reunited with brother Oscar, who has played two Champions League qualifiers and was introduced as a late substitute during the 2-2 draw with Galatasaray on matchday one. His twin Emil isn't in the first-team squad but has started – and scored – in both Youth League fixtures for the Danes thus far and should be involved at Leigh on Tuesday.
