Rangnick delivers team news update

Friday 11 March 2022 13:47

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has provided the latest information on his squad ahead of the game with Tottenham.

Saturday's 17:30 GMT kick-off in the Premier League is the Reds' final domestic outing of the month, although we welcome Atletico Madrid to Old Trafford next Tuesday in the second leg of our Champions League round-of-16 encounter.

With the side desperate to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing derby defeat to Manchester City, there were four notable absentees for that loss - Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.

Full-back Shaw is still absent after testing positive for Covid-19 again on Thursday, but Varane should return after contracting the virus.

There is also good news regarding Ronaldo and Cavani, with both strikers hopefully available after their injury problems.

However, Scott McTominay looks like missing out with a calf injury, as there is a concern it will be a risk that he will miss the Atletico clash if he plays on Saturday.

"With regard to players, we will still miss out Luke Shaw," explained Rangnick at his pre-match press conference. "He's, until yesterday, being tested positive with Covid, and Scotty is a question mark, he had some problems with his calf so we have to wait and see until after training today.

"But, right now, it is more likely that he will not be available because if we risk him tomorrow, he will more likely be out for the game on Tuesday. That's why I tend, with muscular issues - even more so if it's the calf muscle - I tend to be careful.

"Cristiano resumed training yesterday. He trained for the whole session and I expect him to be training today as well. He trained well, like the rest of the group, so I would have thought that he's available for tomorrow. What's important is that he and Edi are both back in training and are both available for the game."

TOTTENHAM'S TEAM NEWS

Ryan Sessegnon has been ruled out by Antonio Conte, with the wing-back not available again until after the international break.

"Ryan had a scan and he has a muscular problem," said the Spurs boss. "I think he will need one month to recover. For sure, it's a pity because, at the moment, Ryan is giving continuity in his performances and this is injury is no good for him, no good for the team."

Homegrown products Oliver Skipp (groin) and Japhet Tanganga (knee) are also missing for the visitors, who do not appear to have any other fitness concerns.
