Team news for Monday's Wolves opener

Friday 11 August 2023 13:30

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has delivered his first team-news bulletin for the 2023/24 Premier League season.

The Reds begin the campaign with Monday night's home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers (20:00 BST kick-off), and new signings Andre Onana and Mason Mount are expected to be in the matchday squad.

However, Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund, our most recent buy, must wait for his debut after picking up an injury.

When asked at his press conference for the latest on Hojlund's fitness, Ten Hag replied: "As we said previously, he had a small issue and he is not on the [same] levels our players are at in this moment.

"So now we have to train him. The prognosis is difficult to say. We are confident and we are positive."

There will be other absentees for the opener, as explained by the manager, as he prepares to name his first line-up of 2023/24.

"Some issues you don't mention, are from last season," he added. "Like [Tyrell] Malacia. We have 30 players and I think we are really fit. Amad, a disappointment, Kobbie [Mainoo] absolutely. But that is what happens when you go to the limits. Injuries are not avoidable.

"We have a strong squad and I can pick a strong team. I think we showed that [in the friendlies last weekend] against Lens and against Athletic [Club]. We have more than 11 starting players."

Goalkeepers Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson are definitely ruled out, with Onana primed for his competitive bow.

WOLVES' TEAM NEWS

The Black Country side have confirmed there are not any injury concerns ahead of the Monday night game and defender Matt Doherty could feature after returning to the club this summer.

There has been a massive change at Molineux, of course, with Gary O'Neil replacing Julen Lopetegui at the helm, and the new boss said on their official website: "The group have been working in a certain way under a different leadership for the last six weeks and now we have a game coming in three or four days against a very good side.

"There’s not loads of time to get them exactly where I want them to be, but I’m just trying to assess exactly where they are and what it feels like at the moment. As the time goes on and we progress, I’m very confident we can get the group to where we need them to be.

"It’s a big game coming really quickly so there’s no time to rest or settle in. We’re straight into it."
