Confirmed: United XI to face Liverpool

Tuesday 19 April 2022 19:00

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has named his side to face Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League.

In total, the boss has made four changes to the starting XI that won 3-2 against Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Phil Jones comes into the centre of defence for his third appearance of the season, lining up alongside Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in a back five ahead of David De Gea.

In the wing-back positions, Diogo Dalot looks set to switch across to left-back, as Aaron Wan-Bissaka is added to the line-up in place of Alex Telles.

Paul Pogba will be partnered in the centre of the park by Nemanja Matic, behind a front three of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga.

After starts against the Canaries, Jadon Sancho and Jessie Lingard are on the bench as Ralf freshens up his attacking options.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the change of formation, Ralf explained: “I said yesterday in the press conference, we need the best possible balance of being stable defensively, enough players behind the ball, always try to be proactive in winning balls but at the same time have some threats in the transitional moments, so this is why I decided for this line-up and this formation.”

On the selection of Phil Jones, he added: “Since Rapha Varane is still injured so I had to decide between him and Eric Bailly, and I decided for him, as an experienced player, as somebody who is also talking to other players, and this is why I decided for him.”

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is not in the squad following Monday's heartbreaking news that his new-born baby boy has passed away. A fan-led minute’s applause will be held in the seventh minute of the game as a tribute to the Portuguese striker and his partner Georgina.

Speaking about Ronaldo, Ralf said: “I think this is the worst that can happen. I’m a father of two sons myself, so I’m fully aware of what that means.

"We’re all behind him, we’re all with him and we just wishfor him and his family that they are strong together.”
