Bruno Fernandes training in the United States

Robson: 'Bruno leads by example'

Wednesday 26 July 2023 09:00

Bryan Robson believes Bruno Fernandes has the leadership qualities and camaraderie to succeed as captain of Manchester United.

Our Portuguese magnifico was given the honour by boss Erik ten Hag last week, having worn the armband on a number of occasions last season.

Bruno celebrated his first outing as club captain by scoring the opening goal in the 2-0 friendly win over Arsenal in New Jersey, which was United’s first match of Tour 2023 in the United States.

Affectionately known as ‘Captain Marvel’, Robbo knows all about what it takes to lead the Reds, having helped the club win a host of silverware during 12 years as skipper before his departure in 1994.

The Debate | Former United skipper Bryan Robson explains why Bruno Fernandes is worthy captain material for the Reds...

Speaking as part of The Debate panel on MUTV, Robson feels 28-year-old Bruno - who has been at the club since January 2020 - is an ideal fit for the crucial role in the squad.

"He’s a great lad, he works really hard, he leads by example as far as playing the game and that," said Robbo.

"He knows, off the pitch, it’s really important the camaraderie around the camp. I think Bruno will take that on board. He leads by example and he knows that it’s important as a captain to show that you really care about things as a squad and as a team and I think he’ll do that really well."

Fellow panellist and former United man Danny Webber was fortunate enough to speak with Bruno after the Arsenal victory and he fully expects our no.8 to help implement the standards set by Ten Hag on the pitch.

"That’s why he’s been given the captaincy, because his work-rate is there, his camaraderie around the lads as Robbo touched on, and what he creates is something you want your leaders to have," Webber said.

"You could see he had a little smirk on his face when he talked about how hard training was, but it’s something [he] clearly enjoys. It wasn’t ‘training is really hard’, it was ‘you know what, training is hard but I enjoy being pushed and I enjoy pushing the other lads’.

"So it’s the atmosphere that’s being created. Erik has created the atmosphere with his coaching staff and it’s being accentuated now with the captain as well."
